The Head of the Shannon

Dear Captain / Secretary,

Carrick on Shannon Rowing Club invites your club to participate in the inaugural Head of the Shannon, which will take place in Carrick on Shannon on 16th of February 2008. There will be two races, at 11.00 am and 2.30 pm, over a course of exactly 5,000m. This is the first Head of the River that will have taken place in Carrick on Shannon in 21 years - the previous two Heads which took place in 1986 & 1987 included entries from the British National Squad with a young oarsman by the name of Stephen Redgrave winning in two events.

Update 30/01/2008:
In view of the number of requests received from Clubs the organising Committee of the Apollo Duck Head of the Shannon have decided to move the Women's Senior 8s (incl 4x's) to the First Head and split the Senior 4s category between the two Heads - the Mens Senior 4s going in the First Head and Womens Senior 4s now going to the Second Head. This will mean that the categories and Head seperation will now be as follows:

Head One - Male & Female (11am) Head Two - Male & Female (2.30pm)
Womens Senior 8 (incl 4x+/-)Masters 8 (incl 4x+/-)
Mens Senior 4(+/-)Masters 4+
Masters 2xMens Senior 8
Masters 1xWomens Senior 4(+/-)
Senior 2xIntermediate 8 (incl 4x+/-)
Senior 1xIntermediate 4+
Intermediate 2xNovice 8 (incl 4x+)
Intermediate 1xNovice 4+
Novice 2xJunior 8 (incl 4x+/-)
Novice 1xJunior 4+
Junior 2xJunior 16 8 (incl 4x+)
Junior 1xJunior 16 4+
 Junior 15 8

Please note that the reason for all the small boats in the First Head is that the morning usually provides the best conditions for these boats so this decision has been made with safety of competitors in mind. We have also added Mens & Womens Junior 15 8s to the Second Head due to popular demand.

In addition to the Pennants on offer to the category winners we are also delighted to announce that the club with the five fastest aggregated times will receive set of Croker Sculling Blades generously supplied by Crokers Irish Agent, Mike Heskin. We also hope to have more prizes on offer on the day and further details will follow. Entries will be limited to 200 boats on the day so early entry is advisable.
